PHIL 490: The Analytic/Continental Divide in Philosophy

This course examines the emergence of the analytic/continental divide in 19th and 20th-century philosophy. Through a close study of eminent figures of this period, it explores competing accounts of knowledge, objectivity, and philosophical method. Students will analyze how differing approaches to logic, science, and experience led to distinct conceptions of philosophy’s aims and limits. The course provides a focused study of a pivotal historical transition while introducing students to the major traditions, problems, and orientations that continue to structure contemporary philosophical inquiry.
