Programs of Study
The philosophy major provides a thorough grounding in the core areas of philosophy, from logic and ethics to metaphysics and the history of philosophical thought. Choose from five concentrations — including our new concentration in ethics and philosophy of AI — and develop the reasoning and writing skills that consistently place philosophy majors among the top performers on graduate and professional school admissions tests.
We offer two minors for students pursuing a bachelor's degree in another subject at VCU: the minor in philosophy (18 credits) and the minor in philosophy of law (24 credits). Both are excellent complements to programs in political science, pre-law, science, business and the humanities.
Digital Badge in Ethics and Philosophy of AI
Students in any major can earn a verified digital credential in the Ethics and Philosophy AI by completing two philosophy courses: PHIL 202 Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and PHIL 332 Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. The badge is issued through Credly and can be shared directly with employers. Learn more about VCU microcredentials.
Accelerated Bachelor's-to-Master's Programs
Philosophy majors can earn both a B.A. and a master's degree in as few as five years through accelerated programs in public administration, public health or gerontology. Students begin approved graduate coursework in their senior year, with up to 12 credits counting toward both degrees.
Browse our course offerings, from introductory courses in ethics and critical thinking to upper-level courses in epistemology, metaphysics, normative ethics, philosophy of law, philosophy of mind, and social and political philosophy.
Beyond the Classroom
Philosophy at VCU extends well beyond the classroom.
Philosophy and Public Affairs Lecture Series. Each year, we bring philosophers from around the country to campus for free public lectures on topics where philosophy meets pressing social and political questions. Learn more about the lecture series.
Virginia High School Ethics Bowl. The department partners with the Virginia High School Ethics Bowl regional competition hosted by the Collegiate School, where high school students from across the state engage in reasoned discussion of ethical dilemmas. VCU Philosophy Department faculty and students serve as judges and moderators, sharing our department's commitment to the pursuit of truth through careful reasoning with the next generation of thinkers. See this recent VCU News story about our department's involvement with the Virginia High School Ethics Bowl.
Summer Camp. Every summer, we offer a day camp for high school students interested in asking big questions and seeing the world in a new way. Learn more about our Summer Camp.
