Virginia High School Ethics Bowl

The Department of Philosophy participates in the Virginia High School Ethics Bowl, a regional competition hosted by the Collegiate School. The Ethics Bowl brings together high school teams from across the state to discuss and debate real-world ethical dilemmas — from questions about technology and privacy to justice and public policy.

The Ethics Bowl rewards careful listening, respectful engagement and well-reasoned argument. Teams are judged not on rhetorical skill alone but on the quality of their moral reasoning and their ability to respond thoughtfully to opposing perspectives.

VCU philosophy faculty and students serve as judges, moderators and organizers for the event, making it one of the department's signature contributions to the broader community. For high school students, the Ethics Bowl offers an early introduction to the kind of thinking that defines the study of philosophy.
